Course overview

This is an award of Teesside University delivered in partnership with Darlington College and Hartlepool College of Further Education. You develop learning and competence for the Integrated Youth Support Services in roles such as learning mentors, youth support workers, education welfare support staff and Connexions personal advisers. The degree reflects the development of new ways of working and established good practice, especially among the young people who live in the area of the Tees Valley, County Durham and North Yorkshire.

The programme aims and outcomes are defined in the Department for Education specification. The overall aims of the programme are to:

  • provide you with a substantial knowledge base appropriate to undergraduate study
  • provide you with the opportunity to develop skills and values relevant to working with young people
  • enable you, once you graduate, to be competent in an enhanced role in your work with young people
  • equip you with a qualification which can provide progression to the third year of an honours degree programme
  • develop your ability to understand critically and apply the principles of evidence-based practice
  • develop your ability to respond to change in your personal and professional capacities and contexts, and to develop strategies for change in your work with young people
  • establish habits of independent learning for the lifelong development of competence and understanding
  • develop your intellectual autonomy.
