Aviation Technician - Avionics Maintenance (Co-op) is a two-year Ontario college diploma program. Students will learn about aircraft avionics systems used in general aviation, corporate, charter transport category aircraft, and helicopters. The electronic communication and navigation system is the heart of all aircraft. They are vital to the safety and success of all flights, no matter the journey or destination. Specializing in repairing and maintaining these systems is a vital piece of the aviation industry that produces rewarding and in-demand careers. 


With the Transport Canada approved Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program, you’ll learn to become a vital and specialized member of the aviation team. You’ll learn about all aspects of aircraft avionics systems used in general aviation, corporate, charter transport category aircraft, and helicopters. Along with developing cutting-edge computer and electronic systems skills, you’ll also study aerodynamics, safety, and flight control systems. As well, with aircraft constantly evolving and improving, you’ll have opportunities to adapt and upgrade your skills and you progress through the program, embarking on a life-long learning journey. When you graduate, you'll be prepared for an exciting career with Canadian and international avionics-approved shops and aircraft manufacturing companies.


The Aviation Technician - Avionics Maintenance (Co-op) program is a Transport Canada approved program (TC-2011-08-4128) with a co-operative education component. This program provides the knowledge and skills required to start a career in aircraft avionics maintenance, which is responsible for servicing, repair and maintenance of aircraft electrical and electronics systems such as communication, navigation and data systems. This program covers all aspects of aircraft avionics systems used in general aviation, corporate, charter transport category aircraft and helicopters.

The Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program offers a cooperative education component, which provides students the opportunity to gain invaluable first-hand workplace experience within their chosen field. Here are some co-op jobs that have kick-started the careers of some Aircraft Maintenance students before even graduating!

  • Apprentice avionics engineer
    Research problems associated with flight safety systems, landing gear and electronic navigation systems.
  • Avionics assembler
    Assemble, fit and install prefabricated parts to fixed wing or rotary wing aircraft.
  • Electronic equipment maintenance technician
    Repair, conduct and test a variety of electrical systems and products.

Career Information

Fanshawe’s Aviation Technician – Avionics Maintenance program prepares graduates for careers with Canadian aircraft maintenance and aircraft manufacturing organizations. It also provides 18 months of approved basic training credit towards the 48 months experience required to obtain a Transport Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) license, 'E' Category.

1. Apply the current regulatory requirements to the safety and airworthiness of aircraft.
2. Perform major and minor maintenance tasks on airframes and engines.

6. Apply the principles and practices of aircraft maintenance engineer category “E” to all work situations.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English will be requiredto demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the followingmethods:

  • A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English creditfrom an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on theprogram's Admission Requirements
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with aminimum score of 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), withtest results within the last two years
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)Academic test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score lessthan 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within thelast two years. SDSProgram Requirements. 
  • Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overallscore of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands,with test results within the last two years
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) with a minimum score of53, with test results within the last two years
  • A Cambridge English Test (FCE/CAE/CPE) with an overall score onthe Cambridge English Scale of 169 with no language skill less than162, with test results within the last two years
  • An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with aminimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test resultswithin the last two years
  • Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% inESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5Level 10

  • Admission to the Fanshawe College Pre-Technology program doesnot guarantee admission in a subsequent year to the AviationTechnician – Avionics Maintenance (Co-op) program.Successful completion of the Fanshawe College Pre-Technologyprogram, however, does enable the student to be given additionalconsideration when applying to the Aviation Technician –Avionics Maintenance (Co-op) program. ThePre-Technology program is the preferred designatedpreparatory program for admission to the Aviation Technician– Avionics Maintenance (Co-op) program.

This course is an introduction to the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Category E License. It outlines the requirements and processes as well as the roles and responsibilities of the AME. This course also introduces the students to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System as it applies to the field of aircraft maintenance. The students may obtain the Canadian Restricted Operator's Certificate with the Aeronautical Designation."

This course is a comprehensive introduction to basic electrical theory and components used in aviation. Students will gain a familiarity with electrical equipment construction and operation, and its application in industry. The program contains a good balance of theory and practical considerations.

This course is an introduction to the theory of electronic component, circuit and servomechanism fundamentals.
COOP-1020Co-operative Education Employment Prep1
This workshop will provide an overview of the Co-operative Education consultants and students' roles and responsibilities as well as the Co-operative Education Policy. It will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to co-operative education work assignments and will prepare students for their work term.
EDUC-1105Strategies for AME Communication3
This course is designed to support non-native speakers of English with the necessary language requirements to be successful in their Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programs (AAM4, AVI1, AVM4, and ASR1). Emphasis will be placed on sector-specific vocabulary acquisition, AME terminology and abbreviations, listening and reading comprehension, and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
